Rabies vaccination record/history

General information about travelling with pets to the EU from the UK

  • Cats, dogs and ferrets need to be microchipped
  • Rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel. Pet must be at least 12 weeks old to have this
  • Animal health certificate needs to be issued within 10 days of travelling
  • All dogs need anti-echinococcus worm treatment before returning to the UK between 24-120 hours prior to entering the UK
  • Some EU countries require anti-ecinococcus worm treatment on entry. This must be checked by the person travelling.

Animal Health certificate information

  • This replaces what used to be a Brittish EU pet passport (which are no longer valid)
  • It is a set of 9+ pages containing information about the purpose of travel and certification of rabies vaccination
  • It is valid for 4 months from date of issuing (If returning past this, a new AHC needs to be issued)
  • One AHC is needed per trip
  • First AHC cost £225, subsequent AHC £150

Miscellaneous information regarding travel

  • If owner has a registered adress in the EU, obtaining an EU pet passport and receiving rabies vaccination is said country will enable travel during the validity of the rabies vaccination in and out of the UK WITHOUT requiring an AHC. It is not unsafe to receive two rabies vaccinations in a short span of time, as to issue the EU pet passport, the EU vet will likely need to vaccinate against rabies again to certify it has been done to issue the passport itself.
  • Other practices in the UK issue AHC’s as well. We often refer to Animal Health Certificate Online which is a practice based near the Eurotunnel that ONLY issue AHC’s (do not do rabies vaccines, etc). It is possible to enquire there for AHC’s to be issued if this is preferred by the client. We are happy to fill out forms required for an administration fee of £20. https://animalhealthcertificate.online/
